RESTORING SAFETY AND STRUCTURE:FMS DELIVERS MAJOR ROOFLINE WORKS AT HEARSALL ACADEMY

Our brief was to assess the site, provide a safe and compliant remedial solution, and carry out specialist works that ensured the structural integrity, weather resistance, and long-term performance of the building. All work needed to be completed safely, efficiently, and with minimum disruption to the academy’s day-to-day activities. Compliance with relevant building regulations was also a key requirement throughout the project.

WORKS DONE

To execute the project successfully, FMS UK Group provided a full turnkey solution, covering all aspects from assessment and planning to installation and reinstatement:

• Conducted a full assessment of the site to understand the structural condition and project scope
• Carefully dismantled an existing ground-level canopy to allow scaffolding access
• Removed playground astro-turf to create a suitable location for a site office and material storage
• Erected full scaffolding with protective roof covers to ensure work could continue in wet weather
• Stripped and removed damaged roofline tiles
• Dismantled all three affected parapets and removed corroded lintels
• Installed new structural steel lintels faced with a lime render facings to maintain aesthetics
• Replaced rotten timber joists with treated timber for long-term durability
• Designed and built three new hip roofs with high-quality brickwork in keeping with the original design behind the parapets
• Installed new breathable roofing membrane and batons to ensure longevity and resistance to moisture
• Fitted reclaimed roof tiles and specialised hip tiles for a seamless match with existing architecture
• Conducted final safety and quality checks to ensure compliance with building regulations
• Dismantled and re-erected scaffolding for phase two works
• Installed a new canopy cover to provide safe outside playing space
• Reinstated the playground area including re-laying of astro-turf and repositioning of playground equipment
• Relocated site office to allow continued site access during future phases

RESULTS
The completion of Phase One at Hearsall Academy marked a significant milestone in safeguarding the structural integrity and usability of the site. The newly rebuilt gable ends and roofs now offer reliable weather protection, enhanced safety, and improved performance. By using reclaimed tiles and specialist finishing details, we preserved the visual appearance and heritage of the building while introducing modern, robust materials.

Internally, we carried out plasterboarding, plasterwork and electrical repairs to reinstate areas impacted by water damage. This turnkey approach allowed FMS UK Group to provide a seamless transition from problem to solution, delivering high-quality results on time, within budget, and fully compliant with building regulations.
